This is the list of some of the key things that most managers tend to overlook-
.The Team:Place high importance on the team as they would work on the code and hence they need to know the exact aim, requirement and purpose of the client’s point of view. People working on the project should always be involved at all phases post the requirements elicitation so as to prevent miscommunication and to have more creative ideas on the table.
.Colocation: Most of the times managers prefer to sit at a different floor and assign work to the team members from there, but if possible they should sit at a place where they are easily accessible so that small confusions and questions can be answered, easily avoiding time wastage.
.Write down everything: In this concept world with so many easily available management tools like JIRA, HQ, Hangouts, Evernote, etc. writing everything down on a notepad works better than any of the tools in the market.
.Verbal communication is no communication: As a project manager one should not depend on verbal communication alone. Everything that is being discussed with the team should be locked down via an email. Project management systems like JIRA can be used to assign work as it helps you keep track of the project.
.Attachments: Many people tend to overlook email etiquette. But in the corporate world it really matters! Specially when sending an email to a client.
.To use or not to use the phone: Apps like GTM, Hangouts, JIRA, EverNote, Any.do etc. can really come in handy and help you manage your projects on the go. However on the down side apps can also be distracting.Apps like Whatsapp, 9gag, subway surfer etc. really make it hard to concentrate.
.Clients: This one comes especially out of personal experiences. Being friendly with your clients can give you the ease to discuss issues (Purely Technical) and maybe get an extension on a deadline. But never take it lightly and become over friendly because at the end of the day, they are CLIENTS and if there is a mess up then you are doomed!
.Buzz Words: Big Data, Hybrid Cloud, Disruptive technology, SAAS, Responsive, scalable, media agnostic are the kind of words that are generally used while making a pitch. But often when asked something about them, you come across a lot of blank expressions which leaves a bad impression and a loss in the prospective lead. So stick to what you can talk at lengths and don’t go overboard with things that you do not completely understand.
.Consult the Team: No matter what your designation is, never be afraid to consult your team members – for there may be a better way of doing a task.
.Review and Upgrade: Even after a product has been delivered, keep on upgrading it with optimizations to make the product better and further, use it as a training exercise for others. Sending the updated and upgraded product to the client can come of as a gesture of goodwill and helps in securing their loyalty.
